Yes, the story, and the characters, are all ♥♥♥♥, yes the game is super linear and has unnessesary cut scenes, but after you strip all the bull♥♥♥♥ away in the CUSTOM DIFFICULTY menu, its still better than Deadly Shadows.
Deadly Shadows did not have any rope arrows at all, but had a useless and under utilized climbing gloves.
The controls and animations in DS are a joke. Having everything animated at 30 fps, especially the camera, makes the game look broken playing above 30 fps. The controls are built around 24-30 fps as well, which is why they are so clunky and tank like.
Navigating the enviroment is DS is an absolute chore because its so damm clunky, with its forward-stop-turn-forward-stop-turn movement
incapacitation in DS is a pain in the as$, Thief 4 has a unscipable scripted attack. Ill take something slighting boring, rather than a complete pain in the ♥♥♥, any day of hte week.
I don't like the aim reticle in Thief 4, but is much better than the useless gangsta-style that DS positions its crossbow in.
Nobody would be saying that Deadly SHadows was a better game than Thief 4, if it hadn't of been for the story. And story is good. Once. But it doesn't define the gameplay.
Thief 4 might be overly linear, but so where parts of Thief 1. Deadly Shadows levels aren't that much bigger, and Thief 4 if more fun to play.

The tap-button events to open windows and cross areas were unnecessary.
Pretty sure that mechanic is hiding a load screen.
I got the impression Thief is a prequel. It attempted to explain the growth of magic and mysticism that's seen in the trilogy. It also attempts to explain why Garrett is a loner.
All four games have their pros and cons. Thief really takes after Deadly Shadows mechanically.
I think I played 3, 4, then 1 and 2. 1 started out okay but by the end, it turned into a mostly combat game. Reminds me of Splinter Cell in that regard. 2, the pier/warehouse mission is the only one that really stands out and the baron's mansion level in 4 plays out similarly (although not quite as open). 3 introduced the open world mechanic that returned in 4. It allows missions to be more diverisified and focused while the open world focuses on the exploration and discovery. Combat and sneaking wise, they all play out similarly.
I had no problems with the General on any difficulty/play style. On master, the key was putting the lights out. He'd relight some but you can move faster than he can light them. If you don't have a lot of water arrows, yeah, I could see that being a problem.

I had no problems with the General on any difficulty/play style. On master, the key was putting the lights out. He'd relight some but you can move faster than he can light them. If you don't have a lot of water arrows, yeah, I could see that being a problem.

It's a sequel to Thief 3, not a prequel.
Otherwise, I agree with you.
How can one person's opinion be so wrong in this. The hub is smaller and way better to navigate then in Thief 2014, the only linear level in gold was the last level all the other levels are still better then anything 2014 put out. Also no, people like deadly shadows because it was a good stealth game onlike 2014 hell the boss fight in 2014 is the worse thing conceived, deadly shadows and thief 1 did that better. Yes the rope arrows were missing in 3 do to varies reason but the levels were built with that in mind.
Because I'm not wrong.
You seem to like games for the stroy. Thats okay.
But the gameplay in Thief 3 is controling Garret with a garbage clunky camera attacted to his model head which is animated at 30 frames which looks janky as all hell at a faster frame rate, with garbage tank controls that cuts the sensitivty in half when Garret is moving because its designed for a third person perspective, and nothing else.
You defend this POS game so heavily, probably because you think the story makes up for the gameplay, and it doens't, and your hand eye coordination is so poor that when a game has sh*t controls you don't notice.
